Game Review: The Neverhood
The Neverhood is a old puzzle game made in the early 1990's That features a character named Claymen and his travels though The Neverhood.
Gameplay 10/10
This game Itself is very difficult. Expect to spend several hours on each puzzle and several more wandering around not knowing what to do. The puzzles are entertaining (things like symbol translations and mix'match kind of things). The game Leaves you to figure out everything on your own. It makes you pay attention to every detail because at one point or another your going to use almost everything in the environment to finish some puzzle sooner or later. It lets you wander around the land world of the Neverhood with all sorts of knick knacks to keep yourself entertained such as The burping mushroom (i don't know what its actually called) which I could easily spend hours laughing there or go to the drain and spend another couple hours watching Claymen jump into it and into the unknown abyss below..
Graphics 9/10
The game was 100% claymation. This is extremely unique. Probably the only of its kind, The clay look makes the games look very appealing and makes you not expect any high quality graphics. But it also makes it look more comical.
Replay Value 10/10
Although like most puzzle games when you figure out the secret to figuring out the puzzles it loses its replay The Neverhood found a way around that. I found myself playing this game time and time again because of one thing. The Videos. They were so entertaining and hilarious i could not get enough of it. Even now after playing the game literally 20 times over i still want to go back and play the game again for the laughs. Also the game changes the puzzles every new game so the basic principles far solving the puzzles are there but they are slightly different to allow a fresh new puzzle every replay.
Story 8/10
When you first begin a new game, there is no intro so any sign of storyline seems non-existent. Though as you progress you find tapes that explain the history of the Neverhood and your job in it. Explaining any of it would be a spoiler so i will leave it up to others to play the game and find out.
Innovation 10/10
You probably wont find another game like this. The closest game i know of that can relate to this is portal. We all know how good of a game that is. Though they are still very different. The puzzles in this game are also very well made and boggle you down to your brain cells. It makes you think more than you need to.
Overall 10/10
I could say this is the best puzzle game in existence because of its comical (twisted) humor and its very intensive thought provoking puzzles but there can always be something better. Even so this is definitely a great and memorable game for me.
