Game Review: Cave Story
Cave Story is a freeware side scroll game developed by pixel.
Gameplay 9/10
The game is a side scroller, so expect some platforming but in this game you get a gun to shoot down the baddies that get in your way. It has a gun level system which means that when you kill enemies and get EXP, the gun you are holding levels up. The game itself is also fairly difficult as you cannot set the difficulty. The game also has lots of bosses so if you enjoy those big fights you may enjoy this as well.
Graphics 5/10
This game is old and sprite based. So the graphics are very low end. Though its still good enough where you can enjoy the scenery and monsters.
Replay 9/10
After I beat this game I was very satisfied as it had very good gameplay and suddenly I found out that there was tons of extra content to be done. there was a secret *Hard mode* and secret bosses along with hidden weapons. For over a year I have been playing this game on and off because the game is so fun.
Story 10/10
You are a robot from the surface(earth) sent to wipe all life on a flying island. A man named the Doctor comes to the island long after the war with a group of scientists sent to explore the island. There he takes the islands crown and he makes himself king of the island. You as a third person in this conflict must stop the doctor from taking over the earth with the army he amasses on the island. There is much more to the story but that would be spoilers.
Innovation 8/10
Although this game was based off the sidescroll platforming genre the game has an original storyline and a unique way to progress the game. As with games like megaman
you would choose a map and boss that you want to face and you go through that level. In cave story Its a game which takes you through the inner caves of the island in a generic order. Though it lets you enter other areas and do other tasks such as secrets in certain times.
Overall 9/10
The game itself is amazing and the only thing keeping it from a 10 is the graphics. I enjoyed the difficulty as it kept me on my toes but was still possible.
